Yogi Berra once said that baseball is 90% mental and the other half is physical. While the math may not be quite right, that leaves the mental aspect to be between 50 and 90% of the game. If its that important, why don't more people train for the mental part of the game? Everyone who has ever played or coached the game has surely recognized the importance of the mental aspect. Usually we call it mental toughness. How many times have you heard a coach say "we need to have more mental toughness," or that "we need to eliminate mental mistakes"? Actually, I just heard it after my high school baseball game last night, after we racked up a rather pathetic loss. "We need to eliminate the mental mistakes". And boy did we ever.
So it's there. Everybody recognizes it. Everyone talks about it. But how many people actually train for it? I think that a lot of people think that mental training is something you can just have. They think that it's more of a choice, a conscious decision than it is something that is trained for. Many players spend hours and hours on their swing, but very little time on the mental side. So if you are training your mind for baseball, I would say that you have a huge advantage over many people. If not, I found this great program that will give that mental edge that is so important for baseball:
